Do bands like their style? Or do they just feel obligated to look/dress a certain way?

A lot of bands look and dress emo. Do they truly like that look, or do
they just do it to make their music more popular? In other words, do
they feel obligated to "look the part" just because they're in a band?

I'm not in a band but I dress like I could be. I truly like that
style. So it's sad to think some people wear that style when they
don't like it just because they think it will make their band more
popular.

Especially when the band members are over a certain age. Some people
say when a guy over 30 looks emo, it's not because he wants to. It's
because he realizes that's what will make his music sell. Look at
Billie Joe Armstrong. He's 39 and he still dresses emo. Not saying
there's anything wrong with that. But do you think he really likes
that style? Do you think he would look like that if he wasn't in a
band?

Is being in a band like any other job where there's a dress code you
may or may not like?
