New Releases: 'The Iron Lady,' 'A Separation' and 'Pariah'

It's almost 2012, which -- depending on your level of interest in Mayan civilization -- either means the start of the apocalypse or the start of a new year. (Fingers crossed for the latter!) Whether or not you're preparing for the end days, there are still plenty of good movies to check out in the theaters (don't worry, you won't have to spend your final hours watching 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked'). From 'The Iron Lady' to 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' to 'Hugo,' let's take a look at this week's new releases, along with some films that are already on the big screen. LIMITED RELEASES 'The Iron Lady' What's the story: With no new nationwide releases this week, we turn to former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. 'The Iron Lady,' which you may have already heard about if you're following this year's Oscar race, features Meryl Streep as Britain's conservative icon. While Streep's portrayal of Thatcher has riled some across the Atlantic, many have lauded her performance. Not to be completely outdone, critics have also praised actor Jim Broadbent's role as Dennis Thatcher, Margaret's husband. The movie focuses on the days leading up to England's involvement in the Falklands War. Box office projection: Since 'The Iron Lady' is only in limited release this week, we're going to wait to make a box office projection until Jan. 12, when the film hits theaters nationwide. [Showtimes & Tickets] 'A Separation' What's the story: This Iranian film tells the story of a married couple who end up separating. Eventually, the husband is accused of attacking his father's elderly caretaker, and possibly causing her miscarriage. Iran's official candidate for the Best Foreign Language film at next year's Oscars, 'A Separation' has received critical acclaim from film festivals around the world -- pretty impressive for a movie with a reported budget of only $500,000. [Showtimes & tickets] 'Pariah' What's the story: Another film critic favorite, 'Pariah' follows Alike, a 17-year-old African-American coming to terms with her identity as a lesbian. Adepero Oduye, who plays Alike, has been nominated for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards. Earlier this year, 'Pariah' won the Excellence in Cinematography award at this year's Sundance Film Festival. [Showtimes & Tickets] IN THEATERS NOW If any of the limited releases aren't up your alley (or aren't being shown in your hometown), fear not: there are plenty of movies already out in theaters. Fresh off last week's $44 million opening is 'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol,' the fourth film in the Tom Cruise film franchise. This time around, the mission deemed impossible features a jaw-dropping sequence where Cruise hangs from the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Those looking for something a little more serious may want to check out 'War Horse,' the Steven Spielberg-directed flick based on the award-winning stage production, which follows the path of a horse during World War I. Speaking of Spielberg, there's also 'The Adventures of Tintin,' the animated film he directed and co-produced with 'Lord of the Rings' master Peter Jackson. Also for the kids, you have a choice of 'Hugo,' 'Arthur Christmas,' 'The Muppets' or (sigh) 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked' (we'd go with 'Hugo,' our pick for best movie of the year). The dark murder mystery of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' will attract adult audiences, while 'We Bought a Zoo' is good fare for the whole family. And, if you really want to go all out and celebrate the 2012 apocalypse, there's always 'New Year's Eve.' [Photo: TWC] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

'Mission Impossible': Five J.J. Abrams Regulars We Wish Employed Next

Producer J.J. Abrams has generated a great tradition within the "Mission: Impossible" franchise: in the last two "M:I" obligations, Abrams has approached fan-favorite stars from his television past in a nutshell but awesome roles. First Keri Russell sprang into "Mission: Impossible III" in the blink-and-you'll-miss-it dying scene, and offer day latest movie "Ghost Protocol" introduces "Lost" veteran Josh Holloway for the franchise. Just what purpose the first sort James "Sawyer" Ford plays inside the new "Mission" remains to look, but no matter how small or large his role, we're psyched to own him aboard. With Holloway following Russell's lead, we started wondering which other Abrams vets we'd need to see afterwards "Mission: Impossible" movies. Our wish list is past the jump! » David Anders: If there's a cooler Abrams villain than Julian Sark, I have not met himand I've come across plenty of Abrams television! Anders' infinitely badass "Alias" assassin would actually be described as a perfect easily fit into the "Mission: Impossible" world completely on his ownassuming he leaves every Rambaldi baggage in, clearly. » Kyle Chandler: His J.J. connection comes through "Super 8," so technically, he is not an Abrams TV vet. Though "Friday Evening Lights" inside the rearview mirror, we'll take Coach Taylor in any manner we could get him. We're wanting to look for the actor around the future "Mission," possibly just like a new IMF director to train some sense into Ethan Search. » Amy Jo Manley: "Felicity" fans remember her best as insecure sweetheart Julie Emrick, but kids from the 1990's know better: AJJ will forever and then try to be Kimberly Hart, the first Pink Ranger. We'd want to see Amy bring some mighty morphin' "Mission" mayhem, only once the Putties come too! » Lance Reddick: The "Lost" alum and current "Fringe" star can be a natural fit for just about any "Mission" movie similar to Chandler, he'll be an excellent IMF foil for Ethan Search, especially taking into consideration the various law-enforcement figures he's carried out over time. But Reddick also shown his ease of creepiness since the enigmatic Matthew Abadon on "Lost," which makes them a great candidate with an "Impossible" villain. » Ron Rifkin: Is he good? Is he evil? It needed a while for people to acquire a concrete answer, since the enchantingly devious Arvin Sloane saved us taking a chance on his allegiance until the "Alias" series finale. Rifkin, an incredibly gifted actor, brings the same amount of ambiguity just like a new "Mission: Impossible" antagonist. Like Sark, Rifkin's Sloane might be greater than welcome inside the "Impossible" world. And fine, sure, they can bring Rambaldi inside it if he wants to. Which J.J. Abrams veteran would you like to see afterwards "Mission: Impossible" movies? Reveal inside the comments section and also on Twitter!

Digital drives prospects for China biz

With 50% more customers from where you live now China attending the American Film Market this year than a year ago, independent filmmakers have new avenues for entering the restricted Chinese marketplace. China's Film Bureau, part of the Condition Administration of Radio, Film and TV (SARFT), only allows 20 foreign films to unspool around the revenue-share basis, mostly studio tentpoles, which might seem to limit returns for independents. But Peter Shiao, Boss of Orb Media Group, states new digital platforms have a very more effective presence at AFM this year, showing more distribution options than even this past year. "A number of these sites are really trying to visit legit," Shiao states. "There are many new money coming readily available new-media activities." Digital platforms are progressively making inroads in China, though piracy concerns continue being vital. In June, China's finest movie streaming site, Youku.com, launched its Youku Premium paid out content platform after signing a digital distribution agreement with Warner's China partnership, CAV Warner Home Theatre. Youku's rival Tudou has streamed the initial two films in "The Twilight Saga," licensed from Summit Entertainment. Nevertheless the elevated volume of customers is yet another signal in the overall boom inside the Chinese entertainment biz. "It's due to an growing middle-class and growing entrepreneurship," mentioned Jonathan Wolf, controlling director in the AFM. Wolf credited a heightened demand from Chinese clients with adding for the country's growing volume of theaters and co-productions. Hong Kong connection Filmmakers outdoors the where you live now could use Hong Kong becoming an entry road to China. Producers and participants within the territory have language capabilities and Chinese connections to provide the worldwide filmmaking community. Major filmmakers in Hong Kong -- nearly all whom have offices in China -- also provide brought with a boom inside the Chinese entertainment business, and many of them would like to leverage their basic principles backyard partners. Nevertheless the documents might be a formidable challenge. "Usually, when people be interested in where you live now China, there's no better way than going direct," Shiao states. Such producers as Craig Glasser, for example, have became a member of with individual Chinese equity traders to invest in nearly half the budgets from the projects. "The big concern in the Chinese is always that these pictures be capable of play worldwide," states Glasser, who used where you live now gold gold coin for projects including 2007's "Gem Dogs" and approaching project "Cheesecake" from helmer Nadia Tass. "Sure, they wish to ensure these films will open well in China, nonetheless they shouldn't make parochial Chinese movies." That sentiment is echoed by many people people customers at AFM. "What we should are trying to find is great scripts and great tales that will work mainly for Chinese audiences and then will travel," mentioned Milt Barlow, Boss of China Lion. "In my opinion it's nearly impossible to find a picture that really works in China and non-Asian areas we're searching for your fast solution.Inch Barlow states that rule is relevant tor both China Lion's purchases which is co-production options. "Once the script works, as well as the story is great plus it draws in a Chinese audience, you have to take people conversations further," he mentioned. While China Lion is trying to find two to four pictures to produce to the country, Barlow acknowledged that Sino censorship presents serious hurdles, and breaking a Chinese picture to the wider global market remains difficult -- subtitles, for example, don't attract mainstream auds. Through China Lion's distribution partnership with AMC together with other exhibs, it's released several Chinese photos in U . s . States theaters including "A Stylish Existence" and "The Butchers, the Chef as well as the Swordsman." Some Chinese producers will endeavour to mitigate people risks, sometimes by supplying minimum guarantees for China only. But another risk-mitigator, according to him, might be the buyer's relationship while using Chinese censors themselves. Censorship savvy "Certain customers have great associations while using Chinese censors," Shiao states. "Lots of people won't discuss this, however, many friendly entrepreneurs in China at this time around might have an allocation within the China Film Group, which will effectively say, 'I offer the capacity to recommend in my opinion one movie.' According to that buyer's understanding from the procedure in addition to their judge of content, they're usually not necessarily wrong." That market-oriented approach is relaxing the work for just about any growing Chinese movie biz -- regardless of caps. In March, China not successful to fulfill a WTO deadline allowing other entrepreneurs beside CFG to import movies for theatrical release. Many customers, entrepreneurs together with others attending this years AFM from China, however, is most likely not in Santa Monica simply to get content. "There's an over-all recognition that they must grow worldwide, so the fact they've registered as customers In my opinion might be a bit misleading," Shiao states. "Because I realize many of them are going to the AFM their Hollywood 101 lesson." Contact Rachel Abrams at Rachel.Abrams@variety.com

El Gusto

A Quidam Prod. El Gusto, Eikosi Prods., Babylone production, in association with Entreprise Nationale de Television Algerienne, with the participation of the Irish Film Board, Region Paca, La Ville de Paris, Centre Culturel Francais d'Alger, Sanad. (International sales: Babylone Prods., Paris.) Produced by Safinez Bousbia, Heidi Egger, Philippe Maynial. Directed, written by Safinez Bousbia. With: Mohamed Ferkioui, Mustapha Tahmi, El Hadj El Anka, Rachid Berkani, Ahmed Bernaoui, Liamine Haimoune, Abdel Madjid Meskoud, Mustapha Tahmi, Luc Cherki, Redha El Djilali, Maurice El Medioni, Joseph Hadjaj, Rene Perez, Robert Castel, Jose de Suza. (Arabic, French dialogue)Toe-tapping and infectious on emotional and intellectual levels, "El Gusto" is Algerian-born Safinez Bousbia's heartwarming tribute to her native country's lost egalitarianism as much as to the elderly exponents of the popular music form called "chaabi." Comparisons are being made to "The Buena Vista Social Club," and while there are similarities, Bousbia's docu concentrates on the history as well as the music, making the orchestra's reunion at the end especially poignant. Fests will be breaking down the door, since auds are sure to embrace "El Gusto" with gusto; international arthouses could also have a winner. Chaabi is a genre of popular Algerian music that arose out of a felicitous melding of Berber melodies, religious chants and Andalusian tunes. Looked down upon for decades as an unworthy bastardization suited only to the lower classes, it began to find legitimacy in the 1930s under the inspired tutelage of El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka, who founded a conservatory to train young men (chaabi in its early days was performed exclusively by men) as professional musicians. Bousbia's interest was sparked in 2004 when she went into Mohamed Ferkioui's small antique shop in Algiers to buy a mirror, and came away with a wealth of stories about El Anka's conservatory, which Ferkioui attended. Over the ensuing years, the helmer, an architecture student in Ireland, traced all of El Anka's students still alive, most scattered around Algiers or residing in Paris and Marseille. Their stories reflect the mid-20th-century history of Algiers' Casbah, a warren of alleyways that for centuries was home to the city's working class, mainly Muslims and Jews. The demographic made sense: Christians tended to reside in the European quarters and spoke French better than Arabic, whereas Muslims and Jews lived and worked together, connected by their shared Arabic language and common living spaces. Chaabi borrowed from both heritages, and the musicians speak here of their brotherhood. But when the War of Independence came, few had time for music; by 1963, Jews were stripped of their citizenship, and most fled to France where they experienced additional racism. Meanwhile, the Casbah was allowed to crumble, and its residents spread out across the city, further dividing the old colleagues. Deeply affected by their stories, Bousbia was determined to bring the musicians together. When Algeria wasn't forthcoming, she found sponsors to gather them in Marseille for a special performance. Only auds with hearts of stone can watch the reunion of these elderly men without tears, and only those without ears will refrain from swaying to the intoxicating rhythms at the emotional concert. Viewers may notice how the French residents in the orchestra, christened "El Gusto," appear to take control a bit too much, and the concert's formality seems to go against chaabi's roots in bars and cafes, but the privilege of seeing these men together and hearing them play supersedes all quibbles. Visually, "El Gusto" is a pleasure, with Nuria Roldos' fluid camera beautifully exploring the Casbah's byways. Archival black-and-white photos and footage are well integrated, and sound is tops; CDs of El Gusto's performances are selling well. Bousbia took home the prize for Arab-world docu director at Abu Dhabi.Camera (color, HD-to-35mm), Nuria Roldos; editor, Francoise Bonnot; sound, Sebastien Pierre. China bans populist TV skeins

TAIPEI -- China has banned light entertainment skeins -- such as talent shows, gameshows, chatshows and reality skeins -- from satellite TV channels.Media watchdog the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has outlawed shows that it deems "vulgar" or "overly entertaining" from the start of next year on China's 34 satellite TV stations. They must be replaced with news and cultural programming, it has ruled. The move reserves particular ire for programs dealing with marital troubles and matchmaking. The order also bans viewership surveys, and the use of ratings as the sole criteria for whether to broadcast a particular show. The reaction from the local broadcasters has been slightly shell-shocked.Hunan TV said it would adjust its programming to focus on "morality, housekeeping and public welfare."The crackdown comes after a meeting this month of the Communist Party's Central Committee set the broad agenda for policy-makers and focused heavily on culture. The government also said in a communique arising out of the recent party leadership conclave, published in the official People's Daily, that it would intensify controls of online social media and instant messaging tools, the clearest acknowledgment yet from the party leadership that services like Weibo, which are similar to the banned Twitter, are having a major impact on society. The government has been increasingly nervous about the thriving microblogs, and the ease with which they sidestep censorship and government controls. There were 195 million microblog users registered at the end of June. The crackdown comes amid national soul-searching about China's lack of a soul after the death last week of a toddler who was struck by a vehicle and left for dead by passers by. Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' Headed to Cinemax?

Is Mike Mendes turning 'Bond 23' into an Oscar-friendly actor's showcase? The director of 'American Beauty' is apparently reducing the franchise's signature stunts and action moments to pay attention to "characterful performances" from leading guy Difficulties. Since "characterful" is not a word, we are going to accept rumor having a large touch of suspicion. Associates are taking a chance that Craig added more "emotional depth" since he'll be rising against Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem as his foe. Sources the "action moments in India have been axed," but that other action sequences in Istanbul and Duntrune Castle in Argyll "remain for now.Inch While so the India action moments aren't any more, that's because of the possible lack of cooperation through the Indian government, who wouldn't let Mendes film an amazing train wreck there. The director apparently made the decision to maneuver the train sequence to Nigeria because the Indian government wouldn't (ahem) jump in with harmful roof-top stunts. Mendes is familar using the Academy awards: he won Best Director honors for his focus on 'American Beauty' in 1999. City Center to Reopen After $56 Million Spruce-Up

NY (AP) For one of the oldest major performing arts venues in NY one that's hosted many of the world's premier artists for nearly 70 years City Center seems to have had something of a self-esteem problem. It seated over 2,700 people in its main theater, but many of those seats were uncomfortable, the sightlines less than desirable. The lobby felt small and crowded. The beautiful vaulted ceiling in the upstairs lobby was dulled with layers of wear and dust. The distinctive neo-Moorish facade, a city landmark, was barely visible from the street because of dark green awnings in front of it. And you couldn't see the building, located on West 55th Street, from either nearby corner. In short, though it's only a block from the more famous Carnegie Hall, likely no one ever joked, "How do you get to City Center?" (Practice, practice, practice.)But all this is changing.NY City Center, proudly inaugurated by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in 1943, is being reintroduced this week following a renovation to the tune of $56 million. Old layers of paint have been scraped away with razor blades, original color schemes restored. Seats have been ripped out, replaced with plusher, wider models. Better sloping has improved sightlines.Outside, those nondescript green awnings have been removed, replaced by a marquee that shows off the sandstone facade. And hello, self-esteem! illuminated signs are now visible from Sixth and Seventh avenues in Midtown Manhattan."This place has been around a long time, and was truly getting a little dreary," its president and CEO, Arlene Shuler, said in an interview last week as workers around her applied the finishing touches. "People would come here for performances, but not know they were coming to City Center. We felt it was very important to be more competitive in this environment."The building known now as City Center actually began as a home to the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, otherwise known as the Shriners. "They'd been using Carnegie Hall as their meeting house, but Carnegie Hall didn't like all the cigar smoke. So they built their own place a block away," said Duncan Hazard, the chief architect on the job.In 1943, though, the Shriners could no longer keep it and the building was headed for demolition, until LaGuardia and the city council took it over and turned it into an arts center. (It's still owned by the city, which was the major donor to the capital campaign that paid for the renovation.) At the opening, LaGuardia himself took the baton to conduct the NY Philharmonic in the national anthem. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is scheduled to conduct, as well, at a star-studded reopening Tuesday.City Center was a major home for NY culture for decades early on, as an alternative to Broadway theater, and the original home of NY City Ballet and NY City Opera. When those companies later moved to the newly built Lincoln Center, it became underused. It was refocused as a major dance center, and today is home to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater which recently signed a new 10-year deal and to American Ballet Theatre's fall season. It brings in countless visiting troupes, from the Kirov to flamenco performers to tango groups. It also hosts the extremely popular Fall for Dance Festival, a 10-day smorgasbord of global dance that sold out in five hours this year (it begins later this week) and the equally popular Encores! musical theater series. In a smaller theater, it houses the Manhattan Theater Club. One recent loss was the Paul Taylor Dance Company, which recently announced a move to Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater, newly vacated by NY City Opera.Shuler hopes they will return, and that the renovation will draw others, of course. Leading a reporter around the new digs, she and Hazard began on the stage now refitted with a sprung floor, kinder to dancers' feet. Out in the audience, a worker in a cherry-picker was cleaning the domed ceiling with what looked like a giant mop."Over a few unfortunate restorations, the color had become an unappealing gray-white," Hazard said of the theater's Moorish-style ceiling and walls. "We did some archaeology of the paint finishes, and found out the original 1923 color scheme." Now, there are vivid blues and greens. There's also a spiffy new lighting booth. But the first challenge was to improve those sightlines. Undesirable seats were ripped out, bringing the seat count down to 2,250 from over 2,700. Rows were also resloped, adding to better visibility, and staggered. Seats were widened, too, with better cushioning for the derriere. The renovation, which was completed over two summers to minimize disruption, also focused on the inner and outer lobbies. Patrons now enter from the sides of the auditorium, creating more lobby space and improving audience flow. The outer lobby now has a bar, and paned glass doors so one can see in from the street. And for all the faithful reconstruction, a contemporary touch has found its way in: Large video monitors in the inner lobby, which will host three video installations per year. There are added elevators, and even the restrooms have been redone with an eye to Moorish style. (And cast and crew now have their own restroom on stage level, something they were lacking.)Shuler and Hazard seemed especially proud of the Grand Tier lobby, a level up from the orchestra, with its colorfully painted vaulted ceiling and the desert-themed murals on the walls.Restoring the ceiling, workers with razor blades scraped off layers of paint and shellac for four to five months. "It was a real labor of love," said Shuler. On the other hand, the upstairs lobby floor had been buffed with so much love last week that it was dangerously slippery underfoot. That will be adjusted, Shuler said.Back in the theater, sitting in the best Grand Tier seats, Shuler said she believed they were the best seats in the city, bar none they hang over row H, bringing one close to the stage, yet above it.Hopefully, she said, more people will know about them now."We think people are going to be aware now that they're coming to City Center," Shuler said.___If You Go... By Jocelyn Noveck October 24, 2011 PHOTO CREDIT AP Photo/Mark Lennihan NY (AP) For one of the oldest major performing arts venues in NY one that's hosted many of the world's premier artists for nearly 70 years City Center seems to have had something of a self-esteem problem.
