Mattel to get 'Thomas & Friends' Maker HIT Entertainment for $680 Million

NY - Toy giant Mattel stated Monday it's decided to acquire U.K. kids entertainment producer and right owner HIT Entertainment, noted for Thomas the Tank Engine, amongst others, for $680 million in cash from the consortium brought by private equity finance firm Apax Partners. The offer gives Mattel more contact with television and video production. HIT's preschool brands include Thomas & Buddies, Barney, Bob the Builder, Fireman Mike and Angelina Ballerina, most of which are featured in Television shows and video releases. HIT is another part-who owns round-the-clock U.S. preschool funnel PBS Kids Sprout along with Comcast, PBS and Sesame Workshop. Apax had bought the organization for 489 million pounds ($890 million) in 2005.
